Amalgam Removal Q & A

What is amalgam?

Amalgam is a dental material used to fill cavities. Sometimes, amalgam fillings are called silver fillings. It contains a combination of metals, including liquid mercury. By weight, around half of all amalgam fillings is elemental mercury.

In decades past, amalgam was the main material used for fillings. Today, tooth-colored resin is rapidly replacing amalgam as the primary material for tooth fillings.

What are the dangers of amalgam fillings?

Amalgam continually releases mercury vapor, which you can inhale and pass throughout your body. Mercury vapor exposure can potentially cause kidney, heart, liver, and brain damage. It’s a potential cause of, or contributor to many serious diseases, such as:

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Thyroid disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Depression

For all of these reasons, and also for aesthetic reasons, many patients today want amalgam removal. Aesthetic & Integrative Dentistry specializes in amalgam filling removal and replacement using mercury and BPA free materials.

How does amalgam filling removal work?

At Aesthetic & Integrative Dentistry, the experienced dentists use the industry-leading smart mercury amalgam removal technique (SMART) protocol. The practice is SMART certified by the IAOMT, and Dr. Dayries holds a seat on the board of IAOMT. By design, this highly specific protocol provides safe removal, so there are many protective measures in place, including:

  • Surgically clean air filtration
  • Personal protective equipment for you and all dental personnel
  • Saliva ejector to reduce mercury exposure
  • Mercury and BPA free materials
  • Protective dental dam
  • Oral aerosol vacuum to reduce mercury exposure
  • Strict post-amalgam removal mouth cleaning procedures

Dr. Callicutt and Dr. Dayries focus on your safety as well as your comfort. They administer local anesthesia to prevent pain during your amalgam removal. Additionally, conscious sedation and nitrous oxide sedation are available if you suffer from dental anxiety.

What kind of fillings are used to replace amalgam fillings?

It depends on your specific needs. Many patients get tooth-colored composite resin fillings following their amalgam filling removal. In some cases, for example, in situations where you don’t have adequate tooth structure to support a new filling, you may need a crown.

At Aesthetic & Integrative Dentistry, the dentists use only the highest quality replacement materials. All replacement fillings and crowns are biocompatible, non-allergenic and are mercury and BPA free.

When you’re ready to remove your old silver fillings in favor of safe replacements, trust the leading experts at Aesthetic & Integrative Dentistry. Book your consultation online or by calling the office today.
