Emergency Dentistry Q & A

What is emergency dentistry?

Emergency dentistry is just like regular dentistry, but with a degree of immediacy, that’s necessary to treat conditions requiring urgent care.

Aesthetic & Integrative Dentistry offers same-day appointments for its patients who need emergency treatments, ensuring that they can get the care they need when they need it most.

A good emergency dentist is also skilled at working quickly and under a certain amount of pressure. Dr. Callicutt and Dr. Dayries are both highly skilled in emergency situations and can restore your oral health efficiently and effectively.

What are some examples of dental emergencies?

There are a number of different ways that dental emergencies can happen. In some cases, it can be as dramatic as a sports injury or auto accident, while, in other cases, it might be as seemingly inconsequential as biting down awkwardly on a piece of hard food.

Some of the more common types of dental emergencies include:

  • Knocked-out tooth
  • Broken, chipped, or fractured tooth
  • Loose tooth
  • Dislodged filling or restoration
  • Cut or tear on your lips, cheeks, gums, or tongue
  • Uncontrollable bleeding from your mouth
  • Abscess
  • Severe and/or sudden toothache

If you’re experiencing any of the above conditions, visit Aesthetic & Integrative Dentistry as soon as possible.

If you’re experiencing a different condition and aren’t sure if it’s an emergency, call the office and speak to one of the friendly and knowledgeable team members. They’re happy to work with you over the phone to determine what type of care you need.

How do you treat dental emergencies?

Your specific emergency treatment depends entirely on the type of emergency you’re experiencing. If, for example, you have a severe toothache that’s caused by an infection within your tooth, your provider might recommend performing an emergency root canal. If you have a loose or dislodged filling, Dr. Callicutt or Dr. Dayries restores it.

If you fully knock out your tooth, bring it with you to the office. You should transport it in a glass of milk or saliva to prevent the roots from drying out, and avoid touching the tooth by its roots. Your provider tries to reinsert your tooth in its socket. If they’re unable to, they discuss replacement options, like a dental implant restoration or bridge.
