Teeth Whitening Q & A

When should I consider teeth whitening?

If your teeth are dark, yellowish, or discolored in some other way, teeth whitening can restore your confidence. When you don’t feel good about your teeth, you probably tend to smile less or even try to conceal your mouth when you’re speaking.

Stained teeth can even make you feel bad about your appearance in general. But, fortunately, this problem is easy to fix. After teeth whitening, you can feel self-assured enough to show your smile.

What causes teeth stains?

Teeth can develop either inner or outer stains.

Outer tooth stains

Outer tooth stains, which are called extrinsic stains, are the most common type of tooth darkening or discoloration. Extrinsic stains are in your top tooth layer, the enamel. Many different substances can stain your enamel, including coffee, soda, tomato sauce, curry, and tobacco products.

Inner tooth stains

Inner tooth stains, called intrinsic stains, happen within the dentin, the next layer of the tooth beneath the enamel, which is naturally darker than your enamel. Although this type of staining is fairly unusual, your dentin can darken for a few reasons, including tooth trauma, long-term tetracycline antibiotic use, or too much fluoride use.

Aging is also a common cause of tooth discoloration, as your enamel naturally wears down with age. Usually, the darkness is the dentin showing through the increasingly transparent enamel.

Aesthetic & Integrative Dentistry offers effective solutions for all types of stains, including teeth whitening and general oral health guidance.

How does teeth whitening work?

Aesthetic & Integrative Dentistry has several options for teeth whitening, based on your type of stains and your goals.

Chairside whitening

Chairside whitening using the Venus White Max® system takes place in the Aesthetic & Integrative Dentistry office. Within around an hour, you can significantly whiten your teeth.

Take-home whitening trays

With take-home whitening kits, you wear a tray filled with whitening gel daily. Within a couple of weeks, most patients have much whiter teeth.

Laser whitening

Laser whitening is a type of in-office whitening in which a laser activates the whitening gel to start the oxidation process. That breaks down tooth stains to leave your teeth whiter and brighter.

If none of these options are right for you, an alternative like veneers could revitalize your smile completely.
