Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers, sometimes called laminates, are porcelain, porcelain composite, or resin panels that improve the cosmetic appearance of your teeth. Using veneers, Aesthetic & Integrative Dentistry providers can customize your teeth to look the way you want.

When should I consider veneers?

Veneers are one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry treatments because they're safe for your gums, natural-looking, and painless. Using veneers, you can do all of the following:

  • Make short teeth look longer
  • Improve the appearance of oddly shaped teeth
  • Close gaps between teeth
  • Repair chipped or broken teeth
  • Restore old crowns or bridges
  • Improve the appearance of misaligned teeth

Another reason that many patients get veneers is severe tooth stains. If tooth whitening doesn't give you the results you want, or if your stains don't respond to teeth whitening, veneers can completely change tooth color. Veneers are also stain-resistant, unlike natural tooth enamel.

Veneers could be the right dental treatment for you if you need a dramatic visual change but don't want to get full-tooth crowns for financial or other reasons.

Veneers are less expensive because they only cover the front part of your tooth, and they require less time in the dental chair than crowns.

How do I get veneers?

Dr. Callicutt or Dr. Dayries prepares your tooth for bonding by lightly buffing off anywhere from 0.2-0.5 millimeters of enamel. Because they administer local anesthetic and only remove a tiny amount of enamel, the process is painless. Then, you bite into a specialized precise molding system to get the measurements needed to make your new veneers.

At your next appointment, your dentist applies your new veneers permanently to the front of your teeth. If you need any adjustments in color or dimensions, your dentist can do that before attaching your veneers.

If your veneers are lighter in color than your surrounding natural teeth, you can whiten your teeth beforehand at Aesthetic & Integrative Dentistry for a natural and beautiful whole-mouth look.

What do veneers feel like?

Because veneers are the same thickness as the tooth enamel removed, they feel very natural. Veneers won’t aggravate your gums, either. Most patients say that veneers quickly feel like they were always there.

How long do veneers last?

Clinical testing shows veneers can last more than 20 years. The best way to keep your veneers fitting and looking great is check-ups and dental cleanings every six months at Aesthetic & Integrative Dentistry.
